Foam Airplane Homebuilder Coming to AirVenture 2018
July 12, 2018 - Peter Sripol, EAA 1283911, a modeler and homebuilder with a popular YouTube channel and former member of the Flite Test team, is coming to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 with both of his do-it-yourself foam homebuilt ultralight projects.
Peter’s first project was inspired by a visit to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017, and he’s applying lessons learned from that ultralight, which featured wings built with foam board insulation, to his newest model. Peter originally planned on finishing the latest do-it-yourself build in a month, although due to other projects he’s expanded his estimate on the build time.
Peter’s first DIY ultralight was built largely from foam board insulation, plus fiberglass, wood, and some aluminum. It, like the new project, is powered by batteries and model airplane engines. The first ultralight was minimally planned, in contrast to the second DIY design, which Peter took time to design in CAD.
Peter will be in Oshkosh all week with his first ultralight, and will be a part of Imagination in Aviation – A Salute to Homebuilding, a panel of notable figures from the past 50 years of homebuilding history, that will take place Friday night in Theater in the Woods. Peter said he is excited to spend more time at AirVenture and will look for inspiration for his third project, which he said will be “more substantial” than the first two.
