Starting as a simple marriage of a hang glider with a seat, three wheels, and an engine, trikes have steadily grown more refined and more popular since pilots first tinkered with the idea in the late 1960s.
Modern trikes are now available from multiple manufacturers in both single-seat ultralight versions as well as two-seat Light Sport aircraft.
In addition, there are some more conventional ultralight designs where the pilot sits suspended in a harness and actually controls the aircraft by moving their body back and forth. These aircraft are known as “weight-shift” types.
