Jim began flying as a teenager in the 1970’s but never did complete his private pilot certificate. In the 1980’s he bought an American Aerolight Eagle one of the first weight shift Part 103 ultralight vehicles made; he flew it several years over the fields of Iowa. He continued flying GA aircraft whenever he could and logged almost 100 hours in fixed wing aircraft.

In 2007 while driving into Salt Lake City he noticed a gaggle of wings ridge soaring the point of the mountain and immediately turned around and went to investigate this interesting activity. This inspired him to buy all the necessary equipment and started taking lessons to fly paragliders. Since 2007 and a rated paraglider pilot he became a tow tech launching close to 1000 payout winch flights. In 2008, he started flying powered paragliders. Looking for more flying options, he discovered weight shift trikes.

After accumulating 350 hours in his trike, he had an opportunity to buy a used S-LSA from a retiring CFI and began working on his CFI certificate. Jim is an active member in EAA chapter 179, is a Young Eagle pilot, trains and fly’s almost every day since retiring from the high-tech hardware and software industry. Now Jim’s slogan is “Have Plane Will Travel” where he’ll go to the student to train thus saving time and money to learn to fly. Jim just crossed over 1100 hours training and flying light sport trikes.
