The 345th BG Air Apaches in World War II

A new exhibit about one of the most distinguished bomb groups of World War II, the 345th BG Air Apaches is now on display in the EAA Aviation Museum’s Telling Gallery. The 345th helped develop the technique of low-level bombing and strafing in the Pacific Theater. Its heavily-armed B-25 Mitchells blazed a trail from Australia north to the Japanese home islands. Because each aircraft carried a rear-facing aerial camera, their exploits produced some of the most dramatic photographs of the air war. The exhibit uses many of the images to illustrate the devastating blows the Air Apaches inflicted on the Japanese bases, dropping demolition and fragmentation bombs backed by a torrent of .50 caliber machine gun fire. Artifacts and videos tell the stories of the brave crews who flew these unforgiving tree-top missions. A special area honors those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
