Board of Directors Meet at NWOC

By Bill Miller, Secretary, Warbirds of America

Bill Miller

In late February most of the Warbirds of America Board of Directors traveled to Pensacola, Florida, for the winter board meeting. While for some of us the escape to a warmer part of the country was welcome, we did accomplish much during our meeting. While AirVenture provides visibility to much of our efforts, there is much to do throughout the rest of the year that most folks do not see.

As most of you know, the WoA Board works hard throughout the year to assure that the organization functions well and accomplishes our goal of continued service to our members. Your board devotes time and travel throughout the year, at their own expense, to work on the many issues faced by the organization and warbird community. Of course we have fun in the process, but there is much work to do.

As an example, here is a very brief synopsis of what was covered at our last meeting. Present were President Rick Siegfried, Secretary Bill Miller, Treasurer Jud Nogle, and board members Mike Anderson, Wayne Boggs, Connie Bowlin, Ed Finnegan, Dave Rothenanger, Fred Telling, Harold Cannon, Paul Draper, Mary Weed, and Linc Dexter. Also attending and coordinating was our executive director, Bill Fischer.

Board Meeting Minutes:

Rick Siegfried called the meeting to order at 8 a.m. on Thursday, February 17.

Bill Miller presented the minutes from the last meeting and recorded this session.

Jud Nogle presented the financial report. Later Bill Fischer presented the 2012 budget, which was voted on and approved.

Then each committee gave their reports:

Executive Committee – Rick Siegfried discussed board positions.

Hall of Fame Nominating Committee – Rick Siegfried asked for nominations. Also, the board reviewed ideas on how to improve the award ceremony.

Member Services – Jud Nogle led discussion on how membership can be increased.

Government Affairs – Rick Siegfried discussed the ongoing effort to work with the FAA on regulation changes that affect current warbird operation. EAA and Warbirds of America are teaming with other industry organizations such as AOPA for a coordinated effort.

AirVenture – Rick Siegfried discussion about the new Warbird Area Tram Tour that will be available this year. We also discussed the highly successful “Salute to Veterans” theme from last year that will continue as an annual “Salute to Veterans” day. Other items discussed included Veterans Honor Flight coordination.

Squadrons – Bill Fischer discussed the ongoing squadron program.

Internet – Bill Fischer and Harold Cannon brought everyone up to speed on what is going on with our new Facebook presence as well as the Briefing newsletter. We also discussed the possibility of using smartphone technology to improve the AirVenture experience as well as ongoing member communications.

Safety - Rick Siegfried covered many topics related to improving operational safety for the warbird community. Also discussed was a safety learning focus for AirVenture and throughout the year.

Oshkosh Site Planning – Connie Bowlin led conversations about the campground, the new Tram Tour concept, and other Warbird area site ideas and issues.

Sun ’n Fun – Jud Nogle filled us in on planning for the event this year, which included the award ceremony, ramp, and new equipment.

Warbirds in Review – Connie Bowlin presented the planned schedule for AirVenture this year.

Air Show – Wayne Boggs discussed air show activities and wanted to stress that air shows are intended as entertainment for the crowd!

Editorial – Bill Fischer explained that the magazine is going well and that we will have a new reader survey in an effort to improve the publication even more.

New Business – Items discussed were the new brick program in the new memorial area at the north end of Warbird Alley, a possible new Lifetime Membership program, and expanding Warbirds of America/EAA presence at the Reno Air Races.

The board meetings are always lively and cover many topics. Above is intended to give you a very brief description of what goes on at our meetings. Our goal is to ever improve the Warbirds of America experience for all members.

Respectfully,
Bill Miller
Secretary
Warbirds of America Board of Directors
