Q: What are the minimum recommended configuration requirements for Windows?

A: The minimum recommended requirements are as follows:

  • Microsoft Windows 95 or greater.
  • 32 MB of RAM.
  • Hard disk with 850 MB free space.
  • CD drive.
  • 800 x 600 - 256 color video card and driver.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater, or Netscape Navigator 4.7 or greater.

Q: How many CDs are in the archive?

A: Thanks to the high quality and high resolution digital issues, the 1953-2003 EAA Sport Aviation on CD archive contains 31 CDs. Future additions will become available to keep your collection current. Extra sleeves have been provided for future updates in your archive storage case. The contents of the CD set are described here.

Q: Do I need to install all of the archive CDs onto my hard drive?

A: No. Only a single CD and 850 MB free hard drive space is needed for Windows installation. The intuitive archive program keeps track of where issues are located, and will prompt you to insert the appropriate CD when needed.

Q: Why do I need 850 MB of free space on my hard drive? This seems like a lot compared to other archival programs.

A: The EAA Sport Aviation on CD archive requires 850 MB of free space for the searchable database. This searchable database allows you to search through the entire archive by Author, Article Title, or Full Text Search. Although other popular archival programs may have a smaller free space requirement, their search capabilities are not as robust as the Sport Aviation on CD archive.

Q: Can I subscribe for updates to keep my EAA Sport Aviation CD collection current?

A: To keep your CD collection current, you can subscribe to EAA's electronic newsletter, e-Hotline, or call EAA Technical Support at 800-236-4800. You may also check the current Update section to view the current updates.

Q: Is there a Windows and Macintosh version of the EAA Sport Aviation Archive?

A: Only a Windows version of the archive is available. Unfortunately, due to technical issues and the relatively small market, a Macintosh version will not be released.

Q: Is there technical support for this archive?

A: Yes. If you require technical support, visit http://www.eaa.org/sacd/, email us at SACD@eaa.org, or contact EAA Technical Support at 800-236-4800.

Q: How long does the installation take?

A: Installation time of the archive program is dependent on the configuration and type of computer you have. However, due to the extreme size of the archive, installation may take up to 30 minutes or more.

Q: What is the function of each section of the program? (Quick Tour Instructions)

A: The following describes each of the areas within the program:

Contents - This section allows you to view each cover and table of contents without inserting the applicable CD. When you find the issue you want, click on Browse Issue, and the program will tell you which CD to insert.

Search - You have two search options. You can perform a simple search - Author, Article Title, or Full Text Search, or you can perform an advanced search that allows you to search by a combination of above mentioned search criteria. You can select a single year by clicking on the appropriate year, select multiple years by holding down the control key while selecting the various years, or select All at the top of the scroll box. Additionally search by Author and/or Title and/or Full Text, your choice!

Results - When your search results are displayed, you have the option to view the article or full issue by clicking on the appropriate link.

To learn more about the features of the program, visit the EAA Sport Aviation CD sample page.

Q: When I am using the program, it takes a long time to load a full issue. Is it supposed to be this way?

A: Due to the extreme high quality of the digital issues, it may sometimes take up to a couple of minutes to fully load, depending on your computer's configuration and type. This is normal and cannot be sped up.

Q: My image quality is poor. Can I correct this?

A: Yes. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 installed to view best image quality. If you are using an earlier version of Acrobat Reader, your images may be deteriorated. To remedy this, re-install the Sport Aviation on CD archive and select the first install option - Typical Installation.

Q: When I start up EAA Sport Aviation on CD for the first time and try to view an issue, it doesn't show. Why?

A: When initially starting up the application, Adobe Acrobat Reader would like you to accept its license agreement. This license agreement will sometimes pop behind the EAA Sport Aviation on CD application, hiding it from view. Simply minimize the EAA Sport Aviation application to reveal the license agreement to accept it. After the agreement has been accepted, the program should run normally. This will only happen the first time the application is run.

Q: Why can't I find an article I am searching for when I perform a full text search?

A: The archive program uses a technology called Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to search the scanned words of each issue. Unfortunately with over 14,000 articles in the archive, the technology may have not captured all the information 100% accurately. We suggest trying other keywords to narrow down your search.

Q: A "Page cannot be found" error occurs when I try using the Search portion of the archive. Everything else works fine, can this be corrected?

A: Yes. A minor issue was discovered after the initial release of the product that prevents the Search screen from being displayed IF the archive was installed on a non-C hard-drive. If you chose to install the archive on a hard-drive other than the C:\ drive, you are likely to have this problem. Please visit the Update section to request a new Installation CD which corrects this problem.

Q: It takes a long time when I search the archive. Can I speed the searching up?

A: Because the archive is so extensive, we suggest a couple of tricks that will help you narrow down your search, which will speed up the process :

Narrow your search by using as many known items as you can. Use more keywords and/or dates in your search. Use double quotes ( " ) to contain sets of words you are searching for. For example, you are searching for articles written by Jack Cox. If you just type in Jack Cox, the archive searches for items that match Jack and for items that match Cox. However, if you type in "Jack Cox" using double quotes, the archive searches for that contained set of words and displays items that match Jack Cox. This trick can be used for any strings of words you want to search for, i.e. "J3 Cub", "AirVenture 1999", "Paul Poberezny", "Spirit of St. Louis".

Q: A "30 day evaluation period has expired!" error message appears when I install the archive. Can I fix this?

A: Yes. If this error message appears, a registry item was not updated correctly on your machine either because the user is running the original version (v1.0) of the archive or because the user does not having sufficient workstation rights.

To remedy this:

If you are running version 1.0 of the archive, please email sacd@eaa.org to request a fix to this problem.

When installing the archive on a computer with Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP you must have workstation administrator rights. This error message may also appear if you have installed the archive as an user without sufficient rights. To remedy this, you must gain workstation administrator rights on your specific computer. Refer to your operating system manual or network administrator for more information on gaining workstation administrator rights. (Note: this is an erroneous message produced by the Operating System. The archive does not use an evaluation product to run the application.)

Q: When I start the program, it brings up AOL and displays the message "The page cannot be found." Can I fix this?

A: Yes. The EAA Sport Aviation on CD archive uses your default internet browser to run the application. If AOL is set up as your default internet browsing source, the archive will automatically bring up AOL. Since the archive requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater, or Netscape Navigator 4.7 or greater, it will not run in AOL. To remedy this, you need to make either Internet Explorer or Netscape your default internet browser. Please read your specific browser help files for information on how to do this.

Q: I don't have the EAA Sport Aviation on CD archive yet. Do I need to purchase any Updates along with the full CD set?

A: No. All new full CD sets of Sport Aviation on CD include the most up to date archive and application. If you have a past version of the archive, you will need to purchase the separate Update to keep your collection current.

Q: My computer runs slower after I use the EAA Sport Aviation archive. Why is this?

A: You may be improperly closing the archive program. Make sure you use the QUIT button located within the program and not the browser window close button (usually a "x" in the corner of the window).

The application runs a database in the background and when you click the QUIT button, it closes the browser window and the database. If you just click the "x" close button, the database will remain running in the background until you log off of your computer.

Q: When I launch the archive, my browser displays a "page not found" or "cannot find server" error message. Could my firewall be affecting the archive?

A: Yes, depending on your firewall settings, it could be blocking the archive from displaying its pages properly.

To test, temporarily disable your firewall and launch the archive. If it displays properly your firewall is blocking the pages when enabled. You will need to change your firewall settings to allow the web address http://127.0.0.1:8080 (127.0.0.1 is the address to your computer, and it uses port 8080).

Q: What issues (years) of EAA Sport Aviation appear on each individual data disc?

A: Each data CD in the archive contains a specific amount of EAA Sport Aviation issues, depending on the size each issue. The low number CDs will contain more issues since the issues at that time were smaller.

The following lists what issues (years) are on each CD:

  • CD 1 February 1953 - December 1958
