TFRs Announced for National Party Conventions
August 9, 2012 - The FAA has issued flight advisories alerting pilots of large temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) planned for the upcoming Republican and Democratic national conventions, both of which have been classified as national special security events. The Republican convention is scheduled August 26-30 in Tampa, Florida, and the Democratic convention is September 3-6 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
According to the flight advisory, the RNC TFR will have a 30-nm outer ring and a 10-nm inner core centered on the PIE174008.5 (St. Petersburg - Clearwater International Airport), surface to 18,000 feet MSL, beginning August 26. A 3-nm ring, surface to 5,000 feet MSL, will be in place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily August 27-30.
The DNC convention flight advisory will create a 30- to 35-nm outer ring and 10-nm inner core centered on the CLT074005.4 (Charlotte Douglas International Airport) from September 4-6, with a 3-nm ring, surface to 5,000 feet MSL, in place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily September 4-6.
