Keep on Pushing: Comments to Third-Class Medical Exemption Request Top 3,000 - Drive for 5,000!

June 21, 2012 - Aviators are making their voices heard in response to the EAA/AOPA third-class medical certificate exemption request, as more than 3,000 comments have been made to the FAA docket on the proposal. More comments are needed, though, to help show the broad support for this measure.
Less than two weeks remain in the FAA's 20-day public comment period for the proposal, which would give pilots who fly recreationally the option of getting a third-class medical or, instead, participating in a recurrent online education program that will teach them how to self-assess their fitness to fly. If the EAA/AOPA request is granted, pilots flying recreationally would be required to carry the online education program course completion certificate during each flight.
"Surpassing 3,000 comments to the FAA on this exemption request is a significant achievement because very few exemption proposals draw this much positive feedback, and we thank everyone who has commented already," said Sean Elliott, EAA vice president of safety and advocacy. "However, considering there are tens of thousands of aviators who could potentially benefit from this proposal, we need more voices to be added to show overwhelming support from the GA community."
Current FAA regulation 14 CFT Part 61 requires all pilots to hold at least a third-class medical certificate to exercise the privileges of a private or recreational certificate. EAA and AOPA are asking the FAA for an exemption from that rule. The exemption would allow pilots who complete the online program to medically self-certify to operate single-engine aircraft with 180 hp or less, four seats or fewer, fixed gear, and day VFR flight while carrying up to one passenger.
