March 15, 2012 – Legendary homebuilder, aircraft designer, and civilian spacecraft creator Burt Rutan will receive the 2012 Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Lifetime Achievement Trophy on March 21 in Washington, D.C. Rutan, EAA Lifetime Member 26033, has designed 368 individual concepts and 45 flying aircraft – many of which made their public debuts at Oshkosh. After officially retiring last year from the company he founded - Scaled Composites - Rutan announced the BiPod electric-hybrid aircraft and, most recently, the Stratolaunch Systems air-launch system.
"Burt Rutan has inspired the aeronautical community to reach beyond the conventional for innovation and achievement," said Gen. J.R. "Jack" Dailey, NASM director. NASM will also present its Current Achievement Trophy to the Cassini-Huygens Flight team for its successful and ongoing space mission studying the planet Saturn.
In honor of Burt's retirement, AirVenture 2011 featured a special Burt Rutan Day and featured more than 200 of his airplanes on the field.
