'Hummingbird' Nano Air Vehicle on Time Cover
December 1, 2011 – Time magazine has named the Nano Air Vehicle as one of the 50 best inventions of 2011 and featured it on its November 28, 2011, cover. The device was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and weighs less than an AA battery, carries an onboard camera that can relay real-time video, and resembles a live humming bird in shape and function.
Some of the goals the program achieves include precision hover flight, stability in wind gusts, onboard power, navigation through doorways, and transition from hover to fast flight. The vehicle’s developer AeroVironment says it would take a decade for it to be ready for deployment; however, DARPA has not said how this technology would be utilized. Read more
