iPad May Delete Nav Charts

October 27, 2011 – ForeFlight, which produces electronic charts for the iPad through its ForeFlightMobile app, says the new iOS 5 operating system upgrade for the iPad may delete navigation data stored in its app. Foreflight stores all its data that pilots use within the app and where that data is stored within the iPad file structure may cause data to be deleted if the device is running out of storage space.

According to Foreflight’s website, whenever new data is loaded onto an iPad, whether it be an aviation chart or a favorite movie, if it’s larger than the space available on the device, the operating system starts searching for data in other areas to remove to make room. ForeFlight says that chart data could be vulnerable since it’s located in a “cache” file directory.

ForeFlight has asked Apple to make a modification to the system to prevent this, but in the meantime the company recommends giving your iPad a pre-flight before every use to confirm all data is still loaded in the app.
