July 14, 2011 – Last Friday, July 8 – the night before EAA Chapter 1073’s scheduled pancake fly-in breakfast at the Truckee (California) Airport - Chapter President Tim LeDolce received a phone call from a representative of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger. Sully and his wife, Lorrie, were in the area and expressed an interest in attending the chapter breakfast on Saturday morning. LaDolce got on the horn immediately to spread the word.
“I called whoever I could think of!” he said. “I wanted to make sure that all of our chapter members and other interested people would know that they were going to be at our pancake breakfast.”
About 125 people attended, LaDolce said, and they were thrilled to interact with Sullenberger, EAA Young Eagles co-chairman and captain of the Miracle on the Hudson flight. Chapter member Toodie Marshall noted they were already there when she arrived at 8 a.m. “We all really enjoyed meeting him. He is a very personable guy,” Marshall said. The Sullenbergers were there for about two hours.
LaDolce and other members provided the Sullenbergers a tour around the hangar and the ramp, which had a number of airplanes giving Young Eagles flights. About 15 kids received flights and had their logbooks signed by Sully.
“We have a very active chapter and our members really appreciate stuff like this,” LaDolce said. “This was a nice surprise for all of us.
