Wicks, Remos Helping Flight of the Human Spirit Get to Hawaii
Michael Combs is one state away from completing the Flight for the Human Spirit.
November 24, 2010 —Michael Combs’s attempt to become the first sport pilot first to visit all 50 states in a light-sport aircraft has already covered 23,800 miles, logged 282 hours of flying time, and touched the lives of 22 million people in 49 states. His project, Flight for the Human Spirit, has inspired people all across the U.S, especially Combs.
“It takes an adventure like this to make you realize how diverse and magnificent the scenery, the people, and the freedoms are that we enjoy in the United States,” Combs said. “I set out to talk to people about realizing their dreams, but what I’ve experienced goes beyond my wildest dreams. There have been some extreme challenges and last-minute changes along the way. One thing I never encountered though was boredom.”
With one state left - Hawaii - Combs is now in fund-raising mode to finance shipping his Remos GX LSA to the 50th state in a container, which will cost $8,600 each way. Wicks Aircraft Supply and Remos Aircraft have already pledged to help out with the expenses, but Combs will need to line up additional financial support before he can head for the islands.
In the spring he plans to share the highlights of his travels at the 2011 Sun ’n Fun Fly-In at Lakeland, Florida. Then he expects to go for at least six world records with his Remos GX. “The aircraft has performed flawlessly,” said Combs. “We haven’t done much more than change oil and it has taken me over some high mountains and through some windy valleys without any problems. The reliability has been a major factor in the success of this program.”
