September 30, 2010 — On September 20, 2010, the day Daniel Manzani celebrated his 17th birthday, he also passed his checkride and is now a private pilot. Daniel, of Temecula, California, got his first taste of general aviation via an October 18, 2008, Young Eagles flight with Gary Timbs (EAA 796894/Warbirds of America 553929) in Timbs’ Cessna 180.
The flight inspired the teen to take up the Sporty’s Complete Online Pilot Training Course, which prepares student pilots for the FAA written exam and is provided free to all Young Eagles. Daniel, who soloed on his 16th birthday, is among the first Young Eagles to complete the Sporty’s course and pass the exam. He also applied for and received a $1,500 EAA flight-training scholarship to help with his training.
“Daniel is more proof that EAA is helping to create the next generation of pilots,” commented EAA’s Brian O’Lena, Youth Programs Manager. “With the Young Eagles flight, Sporty’s online course, a free first flight lesson, flight scholarships, and the upcoming free EAA student membership, EAA is truly providing a flight plan for the student to move into the left seat.”
Daniel currently has logged more than 70 hours of flight time, mainly in a Cessna 172N out of French Valley Airport (F70) in Murrieta, California. His goal is to become a certificated flight instructor and a commercial pilot.
More than 4,700 Young Eagles are enrolled in the free Sporty’s online course. In addition, upon completing the Sporty’s course students can apply for flight scholarships generously provide by Rolls-Royce, Jim and Angela Thompson, and Harrison Ford. Click here to learn more.
