What a month! The North Texas Regional Airport was abuzz with an international cadre of very talented pilots from all over the world. While I didn't attend the entire event, I was present for the second half of the competition, and I didn't miss much - the weather decided to take center stage. Six days into the competition, only 36 pilots had flown the Programme 1 due to relentless rain, low ceilings, and poor visibility.

I drove out to the airport early on Tuesday, and the place was deserted. A tweet from the assistant contest director said it all: "Looks like no flying today thanks to the weather!" By Wednesday, people were beginning to get a bit stir crazy from sitting around in their hotels all day.

Although the day dawned with clear skies, a strong breeze threatened to cost yet another day of competition. After some hurried meetings, a vote was taken to increase the out-of-limit wind speed from 12 to 14 meters per second - a blustery 30 miles per hour or so! With the increase came an elimination of the corner judges, so "outs" were not to be a problem for the remainder of the Programme 1 pilots.

Luckily, the remainder of the competition week went smoothly as far as weather was concerned, and most flying was able to be accomplished in time for the reward ceremony.

If you didn't get a chance to make it to Texas, you really missed out on a truly unique experience in the world of aerobatics. I look forward to the next time the United States hosts a world competition.

Feature Story 1 Team USA Takes WAC Silver in Texas

During the last two World Aerobatic Championships (2009 and 2011), the U.S. Unlimited Aerobatic Team brought home solid third-place finishes. This year, team members marched up the standings and have taken home the silver during a competition marked by the presence of Mother Nature in all her glory. Congratulations and may you continue your march for gold in 2015! You may view all of the results for the competition on the CIVA results website.

Feature Story 2 Rob Holland Takes the Gold
The 4-Minute Freestyle is a contest within a contest at the World Aerobatic Championships. Unlike the other programs, the Free, as it's known, is more like an air show. The pilots are allowed to use smoke, and the routines are flown with maneuvers not typical during competition. Tumbles and skidding maneuvers are used, and pilots are encouraged to use every last inch of the box to demonstrate their prowess.

Anyone who's seen Rob Holland's high-energy air show routines over the last few years knows that he is a preeminent showman. Not only has he managed to wow millions of air show fans at events all across the country, but this year marks the second time he's taken home the gold medal at a world-level competition in the 4-Minute Freestyle. Congratulations, Rob!

Feature Story 2 Worlds From a Competitor's Perspective
As an international competition, the World Aerobatic Championships is governed by the Fédération AĆ©ronautique Internationale. Much like EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the Worlds have to be experienced to be believed. The sheer depth of the politics and gamesmanship at Worlds is breathtaking, and the differences from IAC-sanctioned competitions are like night and day.

Feature Air Show Video Jeff Boerboon: Unsung Pilot of WAC
If you've been a member of the International Aerobatic Club long enough, you'll remember reading about Jeff Boerboon. He's a former U.S. Nationals Unlimited champion and failed to make the 2013 WAC team because of a scheduling conflict during team selection in 2012. He flew as a self-sponsored pilot at this year's World Aerobatic Championships, so his flights were graded but didn't end up in the official tallies. It's quite unfortunate, too, because he would have placed fourth in the Unknown and fifth overall, making him the highest-scoring U.S. pilot. Here's looking forward to 2015. Watch video >>

Notice of Special Membership Meeting
The International Aerobatic Club will hold a special meeting of its members at 9 a.m. Central Standard Time (CST) on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. The location of the meeting will be the EAA Air Academy Lodge, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The sole purpose of this meeting is to decide by vote whether to adopt the restated Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws, dated March 2013, as proposed by the Board of Directors. Your vote will be recorded if you returned the proxy card you received with your election ballot to IAC headquarters by October 18. - Jim Ward, IAC Secretary

Lightspeed Collegiate Grants
The IAC Collegiate Program is a finalist for a Lightspeed Aviation Foundation grant that would send five collegiate competitors to H-R Aviation in La Porte, Texas, to train five hours with Debby Rihn-Harvey.
