Editor's Note It's April, which means spring is solidly underway! I for one am ready to see something on the ground other than snow and dirt. If you've been flying, the smooth air of winter is giving way to the lively air of the spring and summer (unless you live in Phoenix). I guess it's a trade-off: smooth and bundled or shirtsleeves and bumps.

The contest season has been going strong for a while now, and there are lots of contests happening across the country. Please take a moment to look for a contest near you in the Announcements section of this newsletter. If you've never been to a contest, it's a wonderful experience.

Although I mentioned it last month, I'd like to remind everyone of the International Aerobatic Club's new website. The website is the culmination of over a year's work by more than 20 volunteers, and it's a beautiful thing.

Colleen, I know you've been flying a long time; give us a brief rundown on your aviation background.

I'm a whippersnapper compared to grizzled flying veterans like you. I earned my private pilot certificate in 1992, then instrument and commercial tickets, and was content to fly my Cardinal RG for 18 years. I initially became interested in flying after a couple opportunities to fly off aircraft carriers in jets (A-6Es, F-14s). The Navy didn't want me because I was too old by the time I decided I wanted to fly, so I pursued general aviation instead. I only discovered tailwheel flying in 2008. Read more >>

Crosswind plus broken tail spring equals a bad day
Ground loops are a phenomenon that affect tailwheel aircraft due to the fact that the main wheels are placed in front of the center of gravity. If you've ever pushed a shopping cart backward at high speed and felt how eagerly it wants to swap ends, you have experienced how a tailwheel airplane behaves.

This video demonstrates how temperamental a T-6 can be when the factors of a less-than-perfect touchdown are combined with a strong crosswind and broken tail spring. A few techniques could have been used to lessen the probability of a ground loop. Actions such as landing diagonally across the runway into the wind and making sure to stick the landing could have helped. Watch video >>

Beautiful display
Last month, we ran a mystery photo of the Vogt Lo-100 aerobatic sailplane. The responses we got were terrific, and you'll be enjoying the fruits of those responses in the months ahead. A search around YouTube revealed this beautiful video of a Lo-100 performing during an air show. Make sure to turn up your volume so you can hear as it whispers by the crowd during a high-speed pass. Last month's photo was supposed to be a stumper, but many of you got the glider ID correct. The Vogt Lo-100 is a beautiful aerobatic wood and fabric glider with truly classic lines. I got a few e-mails from people who've flown the glider, and they report that it is indeed a nice flying machine.

New Aerobatic Scholarship Available!
Greg Koontz announced that his aerobatic flight school, Greg Koontz Aerobatics at Sky Country Lodge, Ashville, Alabama, will provide a full scholarship to promote aerobatic instruction. "The scholarship is offered to support my interest in promoting and improving the aerobatic instruction field," Greg says. "As it is today, there are no set standards for qualifying aerobatic teachers. It is my hope to improve awareness for this need and help influence industry standards." Read more >>
