Reacting to Potential Avgas Lawsuit
Last week, EAA joined with other aviation organizations including AOPA, GAMA, and NBAA in reacting to the California-based Center for Environmental Health's notice of intent to file suit against avgas suppliers and FBOs in that state regarding the sale of leaded aviation fuel. The aviation organizations are already part of the GA Avgas Coalition, as are the FAA and EPA, which is researching possibilities for very-low-lead and unleaded replacements for currently used 100 low-lead avgas. EAA maintains that a state lawsuit could create a patchwork system of laws that violate the national authority over airspace and aviation operations. Any immediate prohibition of leaded aviation gas would also create a huge safety issue for GA aircraft, especially in a state with extensive private activity such as California.
EAA Board Approves Five-Year Strategic Plan
At the recent EAA board meetings, the board gave approval to the proposed five-year strategic plan for the organization. This plan, which will guide our programs and activities throughout the organization, supports EAA's vision of a growing and vibrant aviation community as well as our mission of "growing participation in aviation by promoting 'The Spirit of Aviation.'" As chapter representatives, you will be hearing more about it in the coming months. Thank you for your continued efforts in supporting and growing EAA's vision and mission.
Student Memberships Get Big Boost
EAA student memberships have now topped 9,000, with more than 1,000 coming in the last 30 days. EAA Youth Programs Manager Brian O'Lena reports that EAA contacted all 2010 Young Eagles with an offer to become student members, and that brought in a sizable wave of new memberships. He also noted that 91 percent of those new student members are enrolled in Sporty's free Online Pilot Training Course, and two-thirds of the group is also taking advantage of the free benefits available through the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
