Welcome to the December edition
of EAA Chapter e-Gram.
|
|
We're coming to you a bit
early due to the Thanksgiving holiday in the United
States. (Our Canadian friends celebrated Thanksgiving back
on October 13.)
We hope you'll have an
opportunity to gather with family and friends and
celebrate the many things we are thankful for this year,
despite the challenges our world can sometimes pose.
|
|
|
No matter what may come our
way, EAA members are part of a most helpful, caring
community. Here's an excerpt from an email I received a
few days ago that illustrates this fact:
"You don't mention it,
perhaps because you don't want to encourage it, but I
recently used a member benefit that is on a par with all
the others combined.
I was planning a trip to an unfamiliar area, and needed
some local information. What better way than to contact
someone with like interests, a helpful attitude, and
willingness to volunteer. Yep, you guessed it. I got some
information off the EAA home page, sent a blind letter,
and got the help of an EAAer at my destination who
provided invaluable local and aviation specific
information. It helped me get where I needed to be on time
at great convenience. I am indebted to a person I've never
met and who doesn't think it was anything special, just
helping an 'unknown friend'.
What a great group to be a part of…"
The writer is correct; this
may be one of the greatest EAA member benefits-the ability
to share and help another person. Be it supplying local
airport information, pitching in to help with a project,
or lending an encouraging word, EAA members have never
been shy when it comes to helping each other. Of course,
nowhere is this more evident than within the chapter
network.
We are a unique organization that prides itself on high
standards, camaraderie and family.
Because of this timely
letter, I'll be remembering all the assistance EAA members
have provided me through the years and giving thanks for
the opportunity to be associated with so many wonderful
people. I hope you'll also take a minute and think about
how EAA members have enriched your life.

EAA CHAPTER LEADERS ACADEMY |
|
With the chapter election
season winding down for 2009, interest in the Chapter
Leaders Academy is growing. These sessions are of value to
any Chapter officers, and we encourage Chapters to
consider sending leaders to an upcoming session. Past
attendees have been overwhelmingly positive in their
reviews and would recommend attendance to other chapter
members.
As in the past, we'll cover
your expenses once you arrive in Oshkosh-food, lodging,
transportation. You'll be responsible for the travel
expenses. (By the way, if you haven't checked lately,
airfares are going down!)

The EAA Chapter Leaders
Academy for January is filling fast, but there are still a
few spots available. If you are interested, please contact
us at chapters@eaa.org. If January does not fit your
schedule, there are two other sessions scheduled this
winter; February 27 - March 1 and March 27 - 29, 2009.
Additional sessions are also scheduled for September and
October. Learn

EAA CHAPTER SERVICE AWARDS
UPDATE |
|
EAA Chapter Service Awards are
provided annually to all chapter officers and volunteers.
The awards consist of a certificate and pin recognizing
those who have served your chapter this past year. The
certificates are printed based on the information your
chapter provided at the time of renewal. The packages have
all been mailed, so your chapter should have received the
awards by now. If your chapter has not received the
package or if changes or corrections are necessary, please
contact us so we can issue correct certificates for your
chapter's leaders. Thank you again for your leadership
during 2008! |

EAA CHAPTER 914 FUNDRAISER
- FOLLOW-UP |
|
Earlier this year, Hurricane
Ike slashed across Texas causing widespread damage. One of
the harder hit areas was Galveston, home of the Lonestar
Flight Museum. Shortly after, EAA Chapter 914 held a pancake
breakfast and donated the proceeds to the museum.
Here's a little more to the
story, in the form of a
letter the chapter recently received.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR
BINGELIS, SPIRIT OF FLIGHT AWARDS
|
|
Is there an extraordinary tech
counselor in your chapter? Or a pilot whose
accomplishments and dedication to aeronautics have so far
"flown under the radar"? Perhaps they may be
appropriate recipients for two annual awards given out at
EAA AirVenture 2009, the Tony Bingelis Award and the
Spirit of Flight award.
The Tony Bingelis award
honors the memory of the highly regarded homebuilding
authority and EAA Sport Aviation columnist. Created in
2002, the award recognizes people who have made
significant contributions to the encouragement of aircraft
projects for fellow EAA members, the promotion of safety,
and for maintaining the values of EAA. A nominee must have
been an active and current EAA Technical Counselor for
five consecutive years.

Bingelis Award winner
The Spirit of Flight
Award was established in 1997 by the Society of
Experimental Test Pilots and Scaled Composites to
recognize an EAA member who best exemplifies the spirit of
research, development, or flight-testing. They promote air
safety by presenting a pilot's opinion, strengthening the
influence of the test pilot on aeronautical progress and
continuously evaluating the adequacy of flight equipment.

SPEAKERS BUREAU … NEW AND
IMPROVED!
|
|
As the planning cycle for next
year begins, don't' forget to make use of the revised EAA
Speakers Bureau when looking for speaker for your
upcoming meetings, fly-ins, or banquets. Improved software
provides more refined and useful searches. New search
screens have been redesigned based on the popular and
easy-to-use EAA Calendar of Events. You can also search
for a speaker by radius, subject, or speaker's name.
These improvements are a
direct result of your comments. Thank you for using the
Speakers Bureau and helping us improve the product for the
benefit of all chapters.
|
|
|
We currently have more than
460 registered speakers…but more are needed! Nearly
every chapter has had an outstanding speaker visit their
meetings or banquets. We strongly encourage you to ask
them to register as a speaker so their presentations can
be shared with others. And don't forget the people in your
chapter who have interesting stories to share.

CAN YOUR CHAPTER LEND A
HAND?
|
|
We have read from time to time
about chapters that have a surplus of past issues of EAA
Sport Aviation magazine that they would like to go to
a good home, and other chapters are looking for special
causes to support. Maybe we have an answer for you.
Recently we received a
letter from EAA member Tim Corban, who is living in
Pakistan and involved with a local children's home.
Although there is interest in aviation in Pakistan, the
country is very poor. What do you think?
If your chapter might be
interested in giving Tim some support, please contact him
directly at UncleTebo@gmail.com.

We
hope you're following along with EAA staffer Brady
Lane's pilot training, which is being chronicled on the
EAA website at www.eaa.org/wings.
The EAA multimedia journalist is taking flight lessons
in pursuit of his sport pilot certificate, and he's
sharing the experience with the world in "Earning
My Wings: A Video Blog About Learning to Fly." Feel
free to post your comments to his weekly segments and
also spread the word to others who might just become
encouraged to begin their own training.
