Roger M. Van Winkle (01/19/1926 - 02/02/2013)


A resident of Warren, IN for many years, Roger passed away at 3:42 pm on Feb. 2, 2013 in Health Care at Heritage Pointe. Roger was born in Lawrenceville, IL, Jan. 19, 1926 to Frank M. and Dorotha Holmes Van Winkle. His family moved to the Warren area in 1936. Following graduation from Jefferson Twp. High School in 1944, he reported for duty in the Cadet Program of the Army Air Corps. While attending Michigan State University, he became a commissioned officer in the Air Force Reserve and later a Major in the Indiana Guard Reserve. His degrees included a BS from Michigan State University, an MS from Purdue University, and a Certificate of School Administration from Ball State University. Roger retired in 1988 after teaching and serving as an administrator in Huntington County for 38 years.

His marriage to Freda J. Lynn, who survives, was June 13, 1948 in Warren. Also surviving are their children, Tamara Higgins and Brent Van Winkle, Florida, and Taha Lynn Donohue, Oregon, two grandsons, Jeff Higgins, Florida, and Evan Donohue, Oregon, and their great grandchildren. His sister, Ruth Anne Welker, Marion, also survives. Both of his parents and a sister, Anita Rice of Columbus, IN, predeceased him, as well as, his daughter-in-law, Laura Mangini Van Winkle, Florida.

Roger was active in many community services: Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor, Scout Cabin reconstruction, 4-H Leader, Town Council Member, Warren Planning Commission, President of the Board of Trustees of the Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club, Township Advisory Board, and Past Master of the Van Buren Masonic Lodge. He was appointed by Gov. Whitcomb to serve as Chairman of the Upper Wabash Valley Reservoir Advisory Committee.

Other memberships included American Legion-Brown & Doyle Post No. 368 in Van Buren, SAR (Sons of the American Revolution), Shrine, Scottish Rite, Secondary School Principals, BMW MOA Club, Nut Growers Association, and Experimental Aircraft Association.

There will be no viewing or service. A private memorial is planned for a later date.

To advance Parkinson research and aid future generations, Roger participated in studies at the IU Parkinson's Research Center in Indianapolis. At that time, he made a decision to become an anatomical donor for Parkinson's brain research. The donation was given to the Harvard Brain Tissue Bank in Boston, MA, who, after examinating and testing the brain, will then share the brain tissue with top Parkinson's research centers all over the world to advance the search for a cure.
