Chandy Clanton (07/10/2009)

EAA and IAC are mourning the tragic loss of Chandy Clanton, aerobatic performer, who perished in a plane crash on Friday, July 10. She was 36.

Clanton, a member of EAA and IAC (Chapter 80) had been practicing about 75 miles southwest of Omaha, Nebraska, in preparation for a performance at the next day’s “Wing Nuts Flying Circus Fly-In” in Tarkio, Missouri. According to reports, her Edge 540 went down in a bean field. The FAA is investigating what caused the plane crash.

Clanton, who had two sons ages 7 and 10, became known to many EAAers in 2003 when performing as the only woman pilot in the Stars of Tomorrow, a group of six up-and-coming aerobatic pilots. She returned to perform in Oshkosh the following two years and was scheduled to fly in the Friday and Sunday air shows this year. She was also a three-time member of the U.S. Unlimited Aerobatic Team.

Family and friends will hold a memorial for Chandy at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church.

My heart goes out to the two sons of Chandy. I just very recently lost my father, and I'm only 17. The loss is almost unbearable and the emptiness doesn't go away. But with God's help and guidance, you will get though this tragic time. Your mother was an amazing piolet. I saw her fly at last year's AirVenture, and she was the one that, I thought, was the best that year. Godspeed and God's Blessings to the family, I pray for you.
